Best practice health care is delivered by qualified professionals whose performance is regularly monitored and maintained. Health care organisations can develop their credentialling processes with advice and support from groups such as ACN and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. ACN’s handbook, National Standard for Credentialling and Defining the Scope of Clinical Practice is available on the Commission’s website. It provides practical information and advice on effective credentialling of cancer clinicians and has been endorsed by Australian Health Ministers. ACN’s Credentialling Steering Committee has produced two reports through the Sydney Health Projects Group at the University of Sydney. These are cancer-specific adaptations of the national credentialling standard for clinical practice. The credentialling of cancer clinicians in Australia - released in August 2005, describes important aspects of credentialling and defines the scope of practice, as well as interpreting the national standard for cancer service clinicians.
