Research study - invitation to participate
If you have undergone and completed chemotherapy treatment following a diagnosis of cancer, and experienced nausea, you are invited to take part in a telephone interview to talk about your experience.
This is part of a study by Cancer Council Australia, Cancer Voices Australia and The University of Adelaide to investigate cancer patients’ perceptions of nausea.
Although drugs to control vomiting after chemotherapy can be effective, nausea is not as well controlled. People can experience a number of sensations related to nausea. This study aims to explore and document the range of sensations and symptoms experienced when nausea is brought on by chemotherapy.
Ultimately, your experience will contribute to efforts to develop more effective treatments for chemotherapy induced nausea.
How the study works
If you agree to participate, a researcher will call to arrange a time that is convenient for you to talk about your experience. Please click here to register your interest.
We will ask what chemotherapy treatment you received, your age, gender, and ethnic background, simply because these factors are known to impact on nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy. After that, what you talk about is completely up to you. We may ask a couple of questions to get the conversation started, but there is no right or wrong answer; we simply want to know about your experience of nausea.
Interviews typically last 20-30 minutes, but you can end the discussion whenever you want to. You can also change your mind about taking part at any time, without giving a reason.
If you are distressed by the interview or report persisting symptoms we can, with your consent, inform your doctor. Alternatively, you can call Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20 for further information or support.
Consent and confidentiality
To participate, we ask you to sign a consent form (please see example), which we will mail to you with a stamped addressed envelope. You will need to sign and return this form before we conduct the interview.
The interview will be taped, so that we accurately record your perceptions. All information you provide is confidential. We will change any identifying information (such as names or places), so you will never be personally identified. Information will be securely stored at The University of Adelaide.
Report
Based on what we hear in these discussions, a researcher from Cancer Council Australia and The University of Adelaide, Dr Jaklin Eliott, will prepare a report, which may be published in an academic journal and/or presented at conferences. You will not be personally identified in any way in the report or presentations.
The study will provide valuable information for researchers and clinicians working on controlling nausea associated with chemotherapy treatment, both in Australia and internationally. The study does not result in any financial gain for the researchers or organisations involved.
