Complementary and alternative therapies

Complementary therapies

Complementary therapies are used alongside conventional medicine. They can support and enhance cancer patients’ quality of life and improve well-being, helping to control symptoms such as pain and fatigue. Massage and acupuncture are examples of complementary therapies.

Alternative therapies

Alternative therapies are used instead of conventional medicine and are not recommended by Cancer Council Australia. They are often promoted as “cancer cures” – even though their use is unproven and has not been scientifically tested. Homeopathy and megavitamins are examples of these therapies.
