Walk to Work Day

Brisk and regular exercise can help reduce your risk of cancer. This October, Walk to Work Day (WTWD) is once again encouraging Australians to leave the car at home and walk to work.

How to get involved

On Friday, 3 October 2008 you can become a ‘walking class hero’ simply by walking all or part of the way to work. Other ideas could include:

  • Getting off the bus, train, tram or ferry a few stops earlier and walking the rest of the way.
  • Walking for 30mins during your lunch break.
  • Increase the amount of incidental exercise you are getting eg. where possible, take the stairs instead of the lift, or walk around the block twice before going back to work.
  • Hold a healthy breakfast at work.
  • If you do have to drive, leave the car in a secure location at least a kilometre or two from your destination and walk the rest of the way.

Registering for WTWD is easy. Simply visit www.walk.com.au and sign up today. You’ll be joining community leaders such as governors, government ministers, MPs, mayors, councillors, CEOs and celebrities, not to mention thousands of everyday Australians keen to take the first steps towards improving their health.

All employers and managers are urged to set an example by participating and encouraging all employees to walk as part of their morning commute to work.
