Submission in response to the Consultation Paper on the Community Sponsorship Fund

Cancer Council Australia provided a submission to the Australian Government on its proposal to  establish a Community Sponsorship Fund to reduce the dependence of sporting and cultural organisations on alcohol sponsorship.  Alcohol is a known risk factor for cancer  and research in Australia and overseas has provided growing evidence that alcohol marketing influences young people's decisions about drinking, their expectations related to alcohol use and their risk of problem drinking in adulthood.

This submission supported the proposal to establish a Community Sponsorship Fund as a first step towards broader restrictions on alcohol advertising and promotion.
