In 2007, 26-year-old Clare Oliver died from melanoma. Clare, from Victoria, visited a solarium about 20 times in her early 20s and believed that these visits, combined with excessive sun exposure, contributed to her diagnosis.

She bravely shared her story to raise awareness of the dangers of solariums and to warn others not to risk their lives. The TV adverts Clare created with Cancer Council and the ensuing media attention gave huge impetus to Cancer Council's ongoing awareness and advocacy campaign against solarium use.

Due to the associated health risks, commercial solariums were banned from 1 January 2015 in all Australian states and territories expect Western Australia, where a ban was introduced from 1 January 2016.

There are no commercial solariums operating in the Northern Territory.

The ban on commercial solariums is the result of almost a decade of campaigning led by Cancer Council, and our partners.
