Out here, the sun isn’t just part of the landscape; it’s a way of life. Whether you're working outside or just out enjoying the great outdoors, the Australian sun can be relentless—and men over 40 are some of the most at risk.

We get it, being sun safe can seem like a hassle, but a few simple steps can make all the difference to keep you and your family protected from sun damage or even skin cancer. Here we answer some common questions about staying safe in the sun. It’s easier than you might think.

I'm a busy guy. I don’t have time for sun protection.

Using sun protection takes just a few minutes and could save you months of treatment, time off work, or worse. Keeping your sun-protection essentials (hat, long-sleeved shirt, sunnies and SPF 50+ sunscreen) by the front door and checking the UV rating (with the SunSmart app) in the morning can help keep you ahead of the game. I don't live near a beach, why should I protect myself?

The beach isn’t the only place you can get sun damage. Anywhere that you’re exposed to UV levels of 3 or above, you need sun protection. In fact, if you're an outdoor worker and living in remote or regional areas, you’re in one of the most at-risk groups. Why? Our research identified forgetting to protect (or simply a lack of time) while you’re busy outside working; as well as disliking the feel of sun protection.

Australia has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and almost twice as many men as women will die from melanoma. The longer you're exposed, the more the damage adds up. But with the right habits, it’s almost entirely preventable.

What if I'm not out all day?

Just 15 minutes of unprotected exposure to the Aussie sun can start to do damage, and that damage builds up, leading to sunspots, mole growth, skin cancer and even worse, melanoma.

If you’ve spent years working or playing in the sun, especially in rural areas, your skin may have taken a hit. But... don't worry. It’s never too late to start looking after your skin.

I often forget to use sunscreen and, when I do, I don’t like how it feels. We get it, remembering to apply when you’re busy can be tough. Why not set an alarm every two hours to remember to top up? That way it doesn’t seem like a hassle.

Sunscreen is an essential part of the five SunSmart steps, but it won’t do all the heavy lifting. For the ultimate protection, always use it alongside a wide-brimmed hat, sunnies, long sleeves – and of course, remember to stay in the shade. If you don’t like how your sunscreen feels, then why not try some different formulas? You'll need to make sure that it’s a broad-spectrum, SPF50+ sunscreen. You should apply 20 minutes before heading outside and use at least one teaspoon for each body part: i.e. one teaspoon for each of your arms, legs, front, back, face/neck/ears.

Remember Sid the Seagull teaching Australians to Slip, Slop, Slap? He's an Aussie classic for a reason. Now there are five sun-safe steps (Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, and Slide) which are important habits to make part of your daily routine - just like checking the weather or packing your gear.

1. Slip on protective clothing

Chuck on a long-sleeved shirt and long pants – lightweight and loose is best, especially if it’s got a UPF 50+ rating. Keep a set handy or stash it in your car with your fishing gear, camping kit, or gym bag.

2. Slop on sunscreen

Make SPF 50+ sunscreen a non-negotiable habit. Put some on before heading out and reapply every two hours; and more often if you're sweating, hitting the water, or after towel-drying. Keep it accessible, such as in a toolbox or tackle bag.

 

Pro tip: Set a two-hour reminder on your phone to top up your sunscreen. Just remember - sunscreen is your backup. Your best bet is covering up and staying SunSmart from the get-go.

3. Slap on a hat

A broad-brimmed will cover your face, ears, and neck. These are the spots that cop the most sun, and a baseball cap just won't cut it. Keep one handy in the car or by the front door so you can grab and go.

4. Seek out shade

If you’re working outdoors (or know you’ll be spending time outside), try to take breaks in the shade; and plan bigger tasks for early morning or late arvo when the sun isn’t so fierce.

5. Slide on sunnies

Your eyes need protection, too. Choose wraparound sunglasses that block UV rays from the side, and keep a pair in the glove box or workbag, so they’re always close by.
