Supportive care policy

The inadequate level of government travel assistance for people with cancer in rural and remote areas is consistently identified as one of the major shortfalls in the provision of cancer supportive care in Australia. It is regarded as one of the reasons that cancer treatment outcomes are poorer the further patients live from metropolitan treatment centres.

Cancer Council Australia has developed a number of policy proposals aimed at reducing geographical inequity in cancer outcomes through improved patient travel and accommodation support:
