Cancer Council Australia Privacy Collection Statement - Donations and Fundraising

Thank you for your generosity and support. We respect the privacy of your personal information and want to let you know why we are collecting it and what we will be doing with it.

We are Cancer Council Australia (CAN 139 793 725), an Australian registered charity.

Circumstances of collection

We are collecting personal information directly from you in connection with your donation, our receipt of donations (including bequests) or our fundraising activities.

Is collection of your personal information required or authorised by law?

There is no law or court order that applies to this collection.

What kind of information is being collected?

The kinds of personal information we are collecting may include:

  • your name, email address and phone number
  • your postal address
  • your employer or organisation details (if you are participating in a workplace fundraising program)
  • your payment details which may include your credit card details (we do not keep credit card details after payment is processed)

Why are we collecting this information?

The primary purposes of collection are so that we may:

  • process financial transactions relating to donations or fundraising
  • provide related receipts, invoices, tickets or other supporting information
  • communicate or provide you with information about activities, programs, campaigns or fundraising activities or about cancer awareness (for example, via a newsletter)
  • provide you with direct marketing
  • undertake activities in support of donations or fundraising.
  • keep records for finance and tax purposes

We may also use your personal information for direct marketing, including marketing to facilitate fundraising and to promote our charitable activities and other services that may be of interest. Direct marketing may be conducted via email, telephone, SMS, social media or other online platforms. If you wish to opt out of our direct marketing, you may do so at any time by emailing info@cancer.org.au or calling 02 8256 4100.

Secondary purpose of collection

Collection may also be for the secondary purpose of preparing de-identified reports and data analytics for the purposes of enhancing our fundraising activities, donation outreach or our charitable activities.

What happens if we do not collect this information?

If we are unable to collect all or part of the information we may not be able to:

  • complete and collect a donation or raise certain funds
  • provide you with a receipt, invoice, ticket or other supporting information relating to the donation or fundraising
  • contact you to clarify information in connection with related transactions
  • enable you to participate in a fundraising program
  • communicate information about activities, programs, campaigns or fundraising activities or about cancer awareness or provide you with direct marketing.

Do we disclose this information to others?

We may disclose your personal information to our employees or to third-party service providers for the purposes of carrying out our functions and activities but such disclosure is subject to our privacy policy. Such third-party service providers may include:

  • Contractors and service providers: who perform services on our behalf, such as information technology services providers (including offshore cloud computing service providers) and database contractors.
  • Social media platforms
  • State and territory Cancer Councils for the purposes of fundraising, marketing and communications regarding charitable activities and campaigns (if you have consented to such disclosure).

We may also be required by law to disclose personal information to a third party. For example, we may be legally required to disclose your personal information to the Australian Taxation Office.

Anonymity

As a donor you may use a nickname or pseudonym instead of your real name.

Will your personal information be disclosed overseas?

It is unlikely that we would disclose your personal information to overseas recipients.

However, we use data hosting facilities and third party service providers to assist us with our donation services. As a result, your personal information may be transferred to, and stored at, a destination outside Australia.

Personal information may also be processed by staff or by other third parties operating outside Australia who work for us or for one of our suppliers, agents, partners or other state and territory Cancer Councils.
