Cancer Council Australia
Tanya Buchanan is Chief Executive Officer, Cancer Council Australia. Joining in November 2020, Tanya comes to Cancer Council Australia as an experienced public health professional.
Tanya began her career as a Registered Nurse and has also worked for the Red Cross Blood Service Australia, in the higher education, local government and the voluntary sector. Tanya holds an MBA in Health Services Administration, a first-class honours degree in English and Comparative Literature, and a B.Sc (Nursing).
As former CEO of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) in Wales from 2006-2011, Tanya was awarded the Leading Wales Award and was admitted as a Member of the Faculty of Public Health by Distinction. Most recently, Tanya has been CEO of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand where for the past five years she has been particularly gratified to be given the opportunity to tackle lung disease head on.
Tanya is passionate about prevention of ill health and addressing inequalities in cancer outcomes.
Reflecting on her appointment, Tanya said, “I am thrilled to be appointed to this very important role in Australian public health and to have the opportunity to lead Cancer Council Australia on its mission to create a cancer free future.
