About the role

The Director, Commercial & Corporate Services will play a crucial role in enabling Cancer Council Australia to deliver on its mission and strategic priorities. The role provides strategic and operational leadership across Finance, Corporate services and Commercial functions, ensuring the organisation is well governed, financially sustainable and operationally effective. This includes oversight of financial management and reporting, budgeting and forecasting, risk and compliance, corporate governance, IT, property and facilities, procurement and contract management, legal and licensing arrangements.

Working closely with the CEO, Board and Board Committees, the Director contributes to organisational strategy, planning and performance, and provides trusted advice on complex financial, governance and risk matters. The role also holds the statutory position of Company Secretary, supporting strong governance practices and effective decision-making at Board level. A significant focus of the role is strengthening systems, processes and ways of working to improve organisational performance and ensure donor and member funds are used efficiently and for maximum impact.

The Director works collaboratively across the Cancer Council Federation, building strong relationships with member organisations, senior executives and external partners to support shared outcomes. As a people leader, the Director fosters a high-performing, inclusive and psychologically safe culture, supporting capability development and continuous improvement across the Commercial and Corporate Services Division.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic leadership across Finance, Corporate Services, IT, Property and Facilities, Procurement, Legal, Risk and Compliance.
  • Lead financial management, budgeting, forecasting and reporting, including Board and Committee reporting
  • Partner with the CEO to drive organisational strategy, planning and performance
  • Strengthen enterprise risk management, regulatory compliance and governance frameworks
  • Oversee licensing agreements and key commercial relationships across the Cancer Council Federation
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with the Board, member Cancer Councils, executives, auditors, partners and service providers
  • Lead, inspire and develop a high-performing, inclusive division culture grounded in psychological safety
  • Continually improve systems, structures and ways of working to ensure efficient and effective use of funds
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of Cancer Council Australia’s Employee Value Proposition

About you

You are a senior executive with strong commercial and financial expertise, combined with a genuine commitment to purpose-driven work. You bring the confidence and credibility to operate at Board and CEO level, and the judgement to navigate complexity within a federated or similarly multi-stakeholder environment.

You are comfortable balancing strategic leadership with hands-on oversight, providing clear, pragmatic advice on financial sustainability, governance, risk and compliance. You have a strong understanding of contemporary corporate services functions and are adept at improving systems, structures and processes to enhance organisational performance and value for money.You bring:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and a CPA or CA qualification
  • Extensive senior executive experience in Finance, Corporate Services or Commercial leadership roles
  • Strong governance capability with experience supporting Boards and Board Committee
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial management, strategic planning, risk management and corporate governance
  • Highly developed interpersonal, negotiation and influencing skills
  • A collaborative leadership style with a track record of building high-performing teams in complex environments
  • Alignment with Cancer Council Australia’s mission and not-for-profit values
  • Understanding of public health and behavioural change strategies.

· Experience within the charity or not-for-profit sector.
